Homework

Read the following three articles, answer the questions and hand your answers in at the beginning of next class (March 24 or 27).

How to Write a Social Media Policy

  1. How would you respond to a business owner who says “I don’t need a policy – I’m just a small company?”
  2. Describe the components of a social media policy.
  3. Choose an example of a government social media policy (from those listed in the article) and summarize its key components.

Social Media Crisis Management

  1. How would you respond to a business owner who says “Crisis management? I can’t think what kind of crisis would come up in my business. And what does that have to do with social media, anyways?”

Social Media Risks for Business (And How to Avoid Them)

  1. How would you respond to a business owner who says “Security? What, you mean like passwords? We already have those.” Explain in plain language the different types of social media security risks and the damage each could do to the company.
  2. Of the tips outlined on how to avoid social media security risks, which two do you consider most important? Why?

6. Myers-Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI) is a personality test commonly used in workplaces to help employees understand their own style and that of their co-workers. Here’s a free online version of the test  http://tinyurl.com/Mbti220

Homework

1. Find a business for your term project, and schedule an interview. Start looking today! You may need to ask several businesses, and it may take a couple of days for them to decide whether they are willing to be interviewed. Be prepared to announce 1) the name of your chosen business, and 2) the date of your scheduled interview in class next week.

Assignment #2: “Social Media’s Globe-Shaking Power”

Approximate time required: 90 minutes

Read the online article “Social Media’s Globe-Shaking Power” from the New York Times:  http://tinyurl.com/Globe220 and answer the following questions (write answers on paper and hand in to me next class). If for some reason the link does not work, just google the article title.

Questions:

1. Paragraph 2 says “On Monday, both Google and Facebook altered their advertising policies to explicitly prohibit sites that traffic in fake news from making money off lies.”  How can Google and Facebook determine which advertisers are making money off fake news?  By what technical means could they prohibit fake news sites from advertising? What are the 1) financial (think about shareholders), regulatory (think about legal and government), and 3) social / ethical implications (think about how interwoven G and FB are in society, and how much users trust them) for Google and Facebook to do this?

2. Explain how the ideas in this article tie in with the “Social Media Spheres” model that we discussed in the first class. Hint: look at paragraphs 3 – 6

3. Do you agree or disagree with the following quote? Support your answer with examples.  “In a way, we are now living through a kind of bizarro version of the utopia that some in tech once envisioned would be unleashed by social media…[we should be] unnerved, rather than exhilarated, by the huge social changes [social media] could uncork.”

4. The article focuses mainly on the negative political and cultural impacts of social media. What are the positive impacts? Support your answer with examples

1) Which of these campaigns did you find most interesting? Why?

2) If you were doing a campaign to promote a local restaurant, which of these campaigns could you use for ideas? How would you apply those ideas to the local restaurant campaign? Elaborate: the answer to this question should be at least 200 words (the equivalent of 3/4 of a typewritten page)

Assignment #3: “Predictions for 2017”

  4. Read Selling Yourself: The Art of Personal Branding,
  5. Answer these questions ((based on articles #3 and #4 above) on paper and put in your binder: Why does the author say that online personal branding is critical these days? Do you agree? Explain why or why not. What are the five most interesting things you learned from this article? What are the important things to remember when taking your profile picture? 
  6. Get a professional-looking headshot (social media profile photo)  and bring to class in digital form.
  7. Decide on Instagram name and set up account. Note: a new niche Instagram, not your “personal life” Instagram
  8. Buy binder
